| GALAXY is composed of six mini-stories and a single
core story which serves as the pivot point for the others. Each represents
part of the journey that forms the quest for the origin of the human soul.
They are:
Just Checking: The unreality of reality
A typical by-the-numbers day at an airport xray baggage
check turns nasty as a nervous traveler can't quite make it through with
a gun strapped to the inside of his pants leg. But it turns out that this
is really a scene being filmed and everyone there is either cast or crew.
And when it's determined that the actor playing the role of terrorist just
doesn't have what it takes, he's dismissed. Permanently.
One More Tomorrow: The value of life
Each morning a man awakens he must answer a question
posed by his computer before he gets up from his bed. And he must answer
correctly. If he doesn't, the explosives wired to the bottom of his bed
will go off. He does this because he knows he's losing his ability to reason.
And he's decided not to go on if he can't think. But his world caves in
on him when he's away and a young boy ends up taking a nap on the bed.
A Better Mouse Trap: The line between sanity
and madness
The CEO of an innovative company masterminds an amazing
product and in the process destroys both himself, his wife, and his wife's
lover. All in the name of progress of course.
Detour: What you don't know can hurt you
In the 1800's, two men out rowing in their skiff stumble
upon a huge wall of iron where none should be. Dense fog is everywhere
as they attempt to identify what it is they've discovered. All through
the night they poke and prod in vain. But with the dawn comes the truth.
Too late as it happens. For they are swept away by a man-high wall of water
-- prop wash from the nuclear submarine which has commanded their interest
all evening.
The Press of Time: We are our destiny
Each member of a junior high class of gifted children
is given a small black box with a huge red button on it. If the button
is pushed, the World will come to an end. The assignment? Don't push the
button. But when one box ends up lodged in a ceiling light fixture -- the
result of a prank -- the class works to get it down intact. In a very real
sense, this is Santa Claus in Hell. They all know it's just pretend. But
is it really? In the end, they rescue the box, but at the expense of their
own trust.
The Third Monkey: Speak no evil
In a post Civil War Confederate prison, a dying blind
man in one cell tells an amazing story to the prisoner in the next cell.
The only problem is, the other prisoner is deaf. And these are the only
two prisoners there. The story is about the discovery of a human-like creature
on a battlefield and its subsequent disappearance. And it is this sixth
story which leads us to the final story and what drives them all.
The Dream of Hope: The reality of unreality
A group of scientists and engineers have been playing
around with time travel in an attempt to locate and identify the carrier
of the original human soul. And in the attempt, they have dislodged the
orderly progression of time. With an unyielding faith in their technology,
they attempt to put everything back the way it was. But the more they try,
the worse things get. Until a final showdown not only explains why they
could never succeed, but reveals a glimpse of what may be the unknowable
truth of the Universe.
